Senate Bill 1398 was adopted by the Virginia Senate and passed to the House of Representatives. Under the bill, accommodation intermediaries are required to collect sales, use and transient occupancy taxes for any accommodation sale they facilitate. The taxes shall be calculated based on the total amount charged for the transaction. Accommodation intermediary means any person other than the accommodation provider that facilitates (brokering, coordinating, arranging) the sale of an accommodation. (§ 58.1-602) The relevant passages shall become effective as of 1 September 2021.
