Closed consultation on TRAI Regulatory Mechanisms for Over-The-Top Communication Services (OTT), and Selective Banning of OTT

On 1 September 2023, the Indian Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) closed the public consultation on Regulatory Mechanisms for Over-The-Top Communication Services (OTT) and Selective Banning of OTT. Regarding the regulatory mechanism, stakeholders were asked to comment on the definition and classification of OTT as well as the need for licensing, regulatory, or collaborative frameworks. Furthermore, the TRAI gathered information on whether the OTT service providers should be subject to the same requirements as the telecommunication service providers. Regarding selective banning, stakeholders were asked to comment on technical challenges and the need for a regulatory framework.
