Implemented Interim Measures for the Management of Generative Artificial Intelligence Services including content moderation regulation

On 15 August 2023, the Interim Measures for the Management of Generative Artificial Intelligence Services to regulate the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) entered into force. The Measures apply to the use of generative AI technology to provide services for the generation of text, pictures, audio, and video content to the public within Chinese territory. The Measures require adherence to laws and regulations, respect for social morality and ethics, and the avoidance of content contrary to socialist values, that threatens national security or promotes discrimination, violence, or false information. Providers of generative artificial intelligence must fulfil responsibilities for network information security, personal data protection, and the quality of generated content. Service providers are responsible for the generated content and are required to block and report illegal content and content related to illegal activities.
