Issued ruling imposing fine on WhatsApp for repeated non-compliance with data localisation requirement

On 28 July 2022, the Magistrate's Court of the Tagansky District of Moscow issued a ruling in the case brought before the Court by the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media of Russia, Roskomnadzor against WhatsApp. The Court found the company in violation of Russia's personal data legislation for refusing to localise the personal data of Russian citizens and issued a fine amounting to RUB 18 million due to the company’s repeated violation of orders to localise personal data within the country.
