Implemented Amendment to Criminal Code expanding criminal liability for discrediting content

On 18 March 2023, the Law No. 58-FZ of 18 March 2023, "On Amendments to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation was implemented following its signing into law by the President of the Russian Federation on the same day. In particular, the Law clarifies the liability for disseminating false information regarding the assistance provided by volunteer formations, individuals or organisations to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to complete the assigned tasks. The actions are punishable by RUB 700'000 to 1.5 million, imprisonment for 18 months or community service. In case the actions that result in death by negligence, cause harm to citizens or public order or disrupt the functioning of the critical transport or social infrastructure, energy, industry or communications facilities, the penalties range from RUB 300’000 to 1 million and imprisonment for 3 to 5 years to five years, and deprivation of the right to occupy certain positions.
