Closed ICO investigation into Facewatch over compliance with data protection legislation

On 31 March 2023, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) released the findings of its investigation into Facewatch, a live facial recognition technology provider, regarding its compliance with data protection laws. The ICO highlighted areas of concern and granted Facewatch an opportunity to address them. In response, Facewatch made several improvements to their product. These included a reduction in the amount of personal data collected, focusing specifically on repeat offenders or individuals involved in significant offences. After reviewing the information provided by Facewatch regarding their implemented improvements, the ICO has concluded that the company has a legitimate purpose in using individuals' information to detect and prevent crime. Consequently, ICO determined that no further regulatory action was necessary.
