Issued Korea-EU Joint Statement on First Digital Partnership Council including AI measures and Quantum Technologies

On 30 June 2023, the European Union and the Republic of Korea held the first meeting of the Digital Partnership Council under the Korea-EU Digital Partnership. The parties expressed their intention to discuss their respective definitions of “high-risk Artificial Intelligence applications” and establish a permanent communication channel for updates on their regulations and frameworks to ensure trustworthy AI. The parties also intend to exchange information on foundational models and generative AI, aiming to promote human-centred and trustworthy AI and maximise the benefits of AI, and advance collaborative approaches in international standards bodies related to AI. At the international level, the parties expressed their intention to coordinate approaches in the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI). Regarding quantum technologies, the parties expressed their intention to establish a “Quantum Experts Working Group” and organise a kick-off meeting to advance cooperation in standardisation and in research topics such as quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum communications.
