On 21 June 2023, the Act respecting online communications platforms that make news content available to persons in Canada (Online News Act/C-18), including fair compensation requirement, was adopted by the Parliament of Canada. The Act requires large platform providers to negotiate equitable agreements with media outlets that share content on their platforms and assist the media outlets within these negotiations. News organisations would be allowed to bargain collectively with the platform to establish the fee for the news content distribution on the platform.
