Adopted EU Commission Communication on the Implementation of the 5G cybersecurity Toolbox

On 15 June 2023, the European Commission adopted a communication on the implementation of the 5G cybersecurity Toolbox. In particular, the Commission specifies the actions taken and the measures implemented to ensure the appropriate level of cybersecurity of its corporate communications and funding activities. The Commission addressed the measures implemented by Member States excluding specific suppliers from their 5G networks, specifically Huawei and ZTE, noting that the measures were justified and compliant with the 5G Toolbox, which outlines criteria for identifying "high-risk suppliers". Furthermore, the Commission, in its communication, stated that it considers Huawei and ZTE to pose higher risks than other 5G suppliers and stated that it would implement policies to ensure Huawei and ZTE are not suppliers for its corporate communications and mobile networks.
