Description

Closed consultation on Safe and responsible AI in Australia

On 26 July 2023, the public consultation closed on the discussion paper on Safe and responsible AI in Australia. The discussion paper focuses on potential approaches for mitigating any potential risks of Artificial intelligence (AI), support the development of safe and responsible AI practices and outlines the current national framework of regulation and AI and international developments. The discussion paper notes that while AI has already brought improvements to various aspects of people's lives, the rapid pace of innovation in this field introduces new uncertainties and public concerns. The objective of the consultation was to gather information regarding potential gaps in approaches, including risks from AI that were not specified, types of high-risk AI systems that should be banned, and the transparency requirements that AI systems should be subject to. The information gathered will inform government deliberations on suitable regulatory and policy responses. The measures will build upon the Government's investment in responsible AI as outlined in the 2023-24 Budget.
