Description

Closed investigation into Viasat and Inmarsat merger

On 25 May 2023, the European Commission approved the proposed acquisition of Inmarsat by Viasat. The entities are the largest satellite communications companies that supply satellite connectivity to several industries but compete most closely in the supply of in-flight connectivity (IFC) for aircraft. During its in-depth investigation, the Commission assessed if the merger would negatively impact competition in the market. Additionally, the Commission evaluated whether new operators of non-GEO satellites, who have entered or plan to enter the market, would exert enough competitive pressure on the merged entity in the near future. The Commission determined that the merger would not give rise to any competition concerns within the European Economic Area and approved the acquisition.
