On 23 March 2023, the Italian Data Protection Authority (DPA) issued ruling 9883613 against Google LLC. The case was based on a request by a private individual to Google asking for the removal of search results in connection with his name. In an earlier legal case, the individual in question had been accused, and later acquitted, of fraud. Google argued that there was a public interest in the publicity of information about the individual, especially since he had unsuccessfully run for an official position. The DPA decided that the data shown in the search results did not comply with the principle of accuracy, therefore ordering Google to remove the search results in question on the basis of Article 58, paragraph 2 of the GDPR.
