Description

Announced Public Prosecution Office investigation into Telegram over alleged misleading messages related to Brazilian Law on Freedom, Responsibility and Transparency on the Internet (Bill 2630/20)

On 9 May 2023, the Federal Public Prosecution Office of Brazil (MPF) opened an investigation into Telegram regarding a message sent to its users in Brazil against the Law on Freedom, Responsibility and Transparency on the Internet (Bill 2630/20), currently under deliberation. The MPF aims to determine the legal basis Telegram used to send messages unrelated to technical updates and communications about the application's resources to its users. Furthermore, the MPF aims to investigate Telegram's decision to send the message to all users, not just those subscribed to the Telegram Notifications channel, and whether it offered users the option of contesting the content published by the platform. Telegram has 10 days to respond to provide information in the MPF investigation.
