Announced Senacon investigation into Google over alleged misleading advertising on Brazilian Law on Freedom, Responsibility and Transparency on the Internet (Bill 2630/20)

On 2 May 2023, the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) announced the opening of an investigation and filing of a precautionary measure against Google over alleged “misleading and abusive advertising” regarding the Brazilian Law on Freedom, Responsibility and Transparency on the Internet (Bill 2630/20). In particular, Senacon claimed that Google is required to disclose in the advertisements displayed on its platforms the conflicts of interest regarding Bill 2630/20. Finally, Senacon required Google to amend its advertisements and disclose and specify to the consumers its commercial interest. In case of non-compliance, Google faces a fine of BRL 1 million per hour.
