On 21 June 2022, the Online Streaming Act (Bill C-11) was passed by the House of Commons. The Bill amends the Broadcasting Act by introducing an exemption clause for user-generated content on social media platforms, to which the Act does not apply. However, the Act allows the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to employ a set of criteria to assess whether or not to impose controls on social media uploads. These factors include the amount of revenue generated by the uploaded program and whether it was broadcast by a licensed broadcasting entity.
