Issued BIS fine against Seagate Technology for alleged violation of the US Export Controls

On 19 April 2023, the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the US Department of Commerce imposed a fine of USD 300 million against Seagate Technology, an American data storage company, for selling hard disk drives to Huawei in violation of the foreign direct product (FDP) rule of the US export controls. In particular, the rule restricts the sharing of information and export of technology related to semiconductors to China and other foreign companies. The entities are required to obtain a licence to export such technologies to other countries.
