Issued Joint Statement on enforcement efforts against discrimination and bias in automated systems

On 25 April 2023, representatives of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued a Joint Statement on enforcement efforts against discrimination and bias in automated systems. The Joint Statement outlines their commitment to enforce their respective regulations to promote responsible innovation in automated systems including artificial intelligence (AI). In particular, the authorities will monitor the development and use of automated systems and avoid potentially harmful uses of automated systems through their collective authorities to protect individuals’ rights in relation to discrimination relating to, for example, AI's use of datasets and the opacity of models.
