Description

Introduction of PRIVCY Act in the House of Representatives

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (re-)introduced the PRIVCY Act (protecting the information of our vulnerable children and youth act) on 28 July 2021. The act aims to increase the protection of children and teenagers provided by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and is partly based on the Age-Appropriate Design Code currently in force in the UK. Some of the planned measures include an expansion of the protection range to teenagers under 18 years. Additionally, any site accessed by children and teenagers will be under the protection of the act and not just sites aimed at children. Furthermore, targeted advertising is to be prohibited. This would be enforced by the Federal Trade Commission which is setting up a separate division striving for youth privacy.
