United States of America: Announced FTC sanctions against Facebook with a fine of USD 5 Billion for consumer privacy breaches

Description

Announced FTC sanctions against Facebook with a fine of USD 5 Billion for consumer privacy breaches

On 24 July 2019, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fined Facebook with a USD 5 billion penalty for breaches of users' privacy. This follows repeated violations of promises made by Facebook, that it would ensure the data of users is protected. Specifically, Facebook violated a 2012 FTC order in multiple ways. Accompanying the fine is a 20-year settlement order that will ensure the implementation of consumer privacy protection in Facebook's organisation through accountability as well as external oversight.
