Introduced Protecting Military Service Members' Data Act of 2023 (S 1029)

On 29 March 2023, the Bill to prohibit data brokers from selling, reselling, trading, licensing, or otherwise providing for consideration lists of military servicemembers to a covered nation, Protecting Military Service Members' Data Act of 2023 (S 1029), was introduced in the United States Senate. The Act reintroduces the provisions outlined in Senate Bill 4281 introduced in the 117th Congress. The Act would prohibit data brokers from selling, reselling, trading or licensing the personal data of military personnel, including addresses, political leanings, and lifestyle preferences, to a covered nation. The covered nations include North Korea, China, Russia and Iran. Furthermore, the Act would give Federal Trade Commission (FTC) the power to investigate data brokers' compliance with the provisions and bring enforcement actions under the Unfair and Deceptive Acts of Practices against data brokers violating the prohibition.
