On 11 March 2024, the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet) announced that Grindr has filed a lawsuit to the Oslo District Court regarding the validity of the Data Protection Board's decision on infringement fees in the Grindr case. Grindr, a location-based dating app for the LGBTQ+ community, faced a NOK 65 million fine from Datatilsynet in 2021. Grindr appealed to the Privacy Appeals Board, which upheld the decision on 27 September 2023. In response, Grindr challenged the state through the Privacy Appeals Board, contesting the decision's validity. The Privacy Appeals Board ruled that Grindr lacked valid consent to share personal information with advertisers for behaviour-based marketing, agreeing with Datatilsynet. Grindr contests this, asserting valid consent and that being a user doesn't disclose sexual information. In addition, they argue that the fine is disproportionately large. The trial is scheduled to take place in the Oslo District Court from 12 March to 14 March 2024.
