Implemented Bill including criminal punishment for online insults

On 7 July 2022, the bill to amend the country's Penal Code to impose criminal penalties for "online insults" enters into force. The bill was introduced amid rising public concern over cyberbullying and online harassment. According to the amendments of the Penal Code, offenders convicted of online insults could be imprisoned for up to one year, or ordered to pay a fine of JPY 300 000 yen.
