On 19 July 2022, the French data protection authority (CNIL) published its position on the deployment of "augmented" cameras in public spaces. "Augmented" cameras refer to the use of automated image processing software combined with camera hardware that allows an automated analysis and/or identification of individuals or their characteristics. The CNIL noted that the use of such cameras in public spaces presented new risks for privacy protection and could lead to intrusive surveillance. The CNIL's position is that augmented cameras are permitted when they are used to produce anonymous statistics, such as when they are used in crowd or traffic control. However, where data is not anonymised, it was not possible for individuals to exercise their right to object under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
