Opened investigation by Japanese Personal Information Protection Commission into LINE for allegedly illegal data transfer

On 26 March 2021, the Japanese Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC) opened its investigation into LINE messaging app for an allegedly illegal data transfer on 17 March 2018. The PPC is now examining the compliance of LINE with the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI). Specifically, a violation of Articles 22 and 24 APPI is alleged. The PPC also obliged LINE to update its privacy measures as well as governance and protection of its stored personal information.
