On 24 June 2022, the Law Commission of England and Wales issued a remote driving issues paper and opened a public consultation on its findings. The paper outlines the current legal status of remote driving, the problems that the existing regulatory framework fails to address and listed options for reform. The consultation aims to gather information regarding the technical standards that remote vehicles should meet to address the safety risks listed in the paper, including loss of connectivity and cyber attacks. Moreover, the Commission is inquiring whether or not remote driving from outside the United Kingdom should be restricted. The consultation closes on 2 September 2022 and the information gathered will be incorporated into Law Commission’s legal reforms proposals.
