Passed Regulation on the transparency and targeting of political advertising including non-discrimination requirement

On 27 February 2024, the European Parliament adopted the Regulation on the transparency and targeting of political advertising, including content moderation regulation. The Regulation outlines transparency obligations concerning political advertising, including advertising displayed on online platforms, mobile applications, websites, games and other digital interfaces. In particular, according to the Regulation, the providers of political advertising services would be prohibited from discriminating against sponsors residing or legally established in the Union based on where they reside or are established. The Regulation is sent to the Council for adoption and will take effect 18 months after being enacted. The regulations regarding the fair provision of cross-border political advertising and non-discrimination will be implemented 20 days after being published in the EU Official Journal.
