Australia: Issued statement on Privacy Act review

On 28 September 2023, the Albanese Government announced its commitment to enhancing privacy protections in response to the review of the Australian Privacy Act. The Government's response aligns with the majority of the review's proposals, emphasising the empowerment of individuals with greater control over their privacy. The amendments suggested include requiring entities to seek informed consent regarding handling personal information. The Government also supports stronger protections for children and the introduction of a children's Online Privacy Code. Additionally, it advocates for making entities accountable for handling individuals' information, enhancing security requirements, and providing entities with clearer guidelines on preserving individuals' privacy. The initiative also aims to simplify obligations when handling personal information on behalf of another entity.
