Announced China WTO dispute against US export controls on chips

On 12 December 2022, China announced it had initiated a dispute against the United States at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over new rules implemented by the US titled “Additional Export Controls: Certain Advanced Computing and Semiconductor Manufacturing Items; Supercomputer and Semiconductor End Use” that came into effect on 7 October 2022, restricting exports to China of chips and any equipment used in the manufacturing of advanced semiconductors using American technology. China has claimed that the measure adopted by the US abuses the concept of national security and export control measures, and threatens the stability of the global industrial supply chains of chips and other products, thus violating international trade law. China and the US will now enter into consultations under the WTO dispute procedures.
