Opened CNIL investigation into Clearview AI over its data collection practices

On 26 August 2020, the French Data Protection Authority, Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL) opened an investigation into the facial recognition company Clearview AI over its personal data collection and biometric data processing practices. The CNIL stated that it has received several complaints alleging that Clearview AI violates the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by collecting and using the personal data of individuals located in France without an appropriate legal basis and by failing to respond effectively to individuals' requests for access and erasure of their data.
