Adopted copyright exceptions for data analytics and artificial intelligence in the Digital Single Market Copyright Directive

On 17 April 2019, the Directive on copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market was adopted by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament. The directive introduces three exceptions from copyright protection. Specifically, the exceptions are for digital and cross-border teaching activities, cultural heritage preservation and text and data mining conducted for research purposes (Articles 4,5 and 6).
