Chinese Cyberspace Administration launches Qinglang 2022 Comprehensive Algorithm Governance audit

On 8 April 2022, the Chinese Cyberspace Administration (CAC) published a notice announcing the launch of its “Qinglang 2022 Comprehensive Algorithm Governance” audit. The aim of the multi-pronged plan is to gain control over the use of algorithms in China. The CAC will assist Internet companies in self-evaluating and self-correcting algorithm application problems. Additionally, the regulator will conduct on-site inspections of Internet companies such as ByteDance Ltd. and Tencent Holdings Ltd. to inspect their usage of algorithms as well as possible security risks. In case of violations, companies will be given certain time restrictions to rectify and adjust any issues. The on-site inspections will last until December 2022. Furthermore, the CAC will supervise the filing of algorithms and encourage companies to follow standards laid out by the CPA (“Administrative Regulations”).
