Published UK AI Barometer 2020

On 18 June 2020, the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation, which operates within the UK Government, published the AI Barometer 2020. The report presents an analysis of the opportunities, risks and challenges associated with AI and data use in the UK. The report identifies some opportunities that are easier to realize than others and ranks a variety of risk statements according to their impact and likelihood. Particularly, the following concerns emerged with significant frequency: the risks of algorithmic bias, the lack of explainability in automated decision-making and the incapacity to obtain meaningful consent from people for the use of personal data. Further, these risks are intertwined with market disincentives and regulatory confusion. Particularly, Three types of barriers are highlighted: low data quality and availability, lack of coordinated policies, and insufficient transparency on the use of data.
