Republic of Korea: Announced establishment of AI Strategy High-Level Council

On 4 April 2024, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announced the establishment of the AI Strategy High-Level Council, a governance body for the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). The Council will have members from the public and private sectors, 32 members including experts on AI semiconductors, research and development, ethics and safety and 7 public officials from government ministries. The Council aims to strengthen AI infrastructure, make policy recommendations, and ensure responsible execution of adopted initiatives to ensure the security and competitiveness of AI technology. The Council will oversee the operation of six subcommittees and the AI Super Large Scale Promotion Council, an advisory body of over 100 domestic AI companies and startups, to support an innovative AI ecosystem and facilitate ongoing dialogue between the public and private sectors.
