Adopted Digital and Social Media Guidelines

On 27 February 2024, the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA) adopted guidelines for the responsible use of digital and social media in elections, emphasising accountability and the need to prevent disinformation. The guidelines encourage African Election Management Bodies to develop comprehensive plans for the use of social media during election campaigns and discourage measures that could disrupt internet access. The guidelines also urge social media operators to ensure fair treatment of political parties and candidates and to avoid undermining the integrity of elections or violating human rights.
