Closed Consultation on purpose limitation in the generative AI lifecycle

On 12 April 2024, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) closed its consultation on purpose limitation in the generative AI lifecycle. The consultation aimed to provide clarity on how the principle of purpose limitation, which requires transparency regarding the purposes for which personal data is processed, can be incorporated into different stages of the generative AI lifecycle. The ICO''s position, on which it sought stakeholder input, is that clear purposes should be formulated for each stage of this lifecycle, along with an explanation of why the kind of data processed at that stage meets the purpose specific to that stage. The inquiry is the second in the ICO's consultation series on generative AI.
