Adopted Telecommunications Authority order requiring the access blocking of TikTok over alleged negative impact on social harmony and social environment

On 13 November 2023, the Nepalese Telecommunications Authority adopted an order requiring the access blocking of TikTok over its alleged negative impact on social harmony and social environment. The order follows the government decision from 27 November 2023, which addressed the misuse of TikTok for allegedly spreading hate speech and creating a negative social atmosphere in Nepal. In accordance with the Telecommunications Act, the Telecommunication Authority required providers of Internet and mobile services to block access to TikTok. The ban takes effect on the day of the order's adoption and will remain effective until further notice. The non-compliance with the order may result in legal action under the Telecommunications Act.
