Description

Passed AB 1194 on exemption from obligation to provide certain personal information to authorities under the CPPA

On 22 May 2023, AB 1194 amending the California Privacy Rights Act was passed by the Assembly. The Bill provides that a consumer accessing, procuring, or searching for services regarding contraception, pregnancy care, and perinatal care, including abortion services, does not constitute a natural person being at risk or danger of death or serious physical injury. Consequently, businesses handling this information are exempt from the obligation to provide information to authorities requesting emergency access to a consumer’s personal information if a natural person is at risk or danger of death or serious physical injury.
