Autorité de la concurrence fines Google for the abuse of dominance in the online advertising sector

On 7 June 2021, the French competition authority (Autorité de la Concurrence) fined Google EUR 220 million for the abuse of its dominant position in the online advertising market (décision 21-D-11). More specifically, Google upheld its dominant position by actively distorting competition through discrimination in favour of Google services. The investigation included a thorough examination of algorithmic auctions, which online advertising is based upon. Google had previously requested the investigation to be concluded through a settlement and proposed several commitments in an effort to improve its behaviour in the online advertising market. Google namely proposed to end the special treatment of its own services and to improve interoperability between Google and other advertisement providers. These proposed commitments have now become legally binding through the decision.
