California Court approves USD 90 million settlement in Internet tracking class action against Facebook

On 10 November 2022, the US District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, granted final approval in a class settlement against Facebook over the platform’s unlawful tracking of users’ activities on non-Facebook pages through the use of the “Like” button. The class action was filed on 30 September 2011 and although Facebook has denied any improper collection of data, it reached a settlement to avoid further costs and risks associated to the case. Under the terms of the settlement, Facebook will expunge all improperly collected data and pay USD 90 million into a settlement fund. The settlement will benefit Facebook users in the United States that used the “Like button” on non-Facebook websites between 22 April 2010 and 26 September 2011. The compliance deadline is 10 February 2023.
