Phase I decision on NortonLifeLock / Avast merger inquiry announced

On 16 March 2022, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) completed its initial inquiry (Phase I) on the NortonLifeLock Inc. / Avast plc merger inquiry. The CMA ruled that the transaction may result in a substantial lessening of competition within the UK markets since the two companies are competitors and the remaining market players offer no sufficient competitive constraints. Therefore, a Phase 2 investigation on the merger will be pursued unless the companies offer sufficient contributions to address the competition concerns within 5 working days.
