FTC issues Report on use of AI to combat online harms

On 16 June 2022, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a Report to the United States Congress on the feasibility and risks of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to combat “online harms”. The FTC recommends in its report addressing online problems by means other than AI, concluding that AI tools themselves are limited in their usefulness and have the potential to cause further harm. In particular, FTC notes that AI tools could amplify discrimination and perpetuate existing biases and encourage commercial surveillance. As a result, the report stresses the necessity for human intervention, transparency, and accountability in the use of AI tools.
