Austrian government publishes action plan to combat deep fakes

On 25 May 2022, the Austrian government published an action plan to fight deep fakes, including an analysis of risk, and a proposal of regulatory goals and measures. The plan is the result of an examination by a task group of the Austrian Federal Chancellery and the Ministries of Justice, Defense, and Foreign Affairs. The plan evaluates different risks of deepfakes with regards to security policy, the rule of law and technology, as well as the extent of these risks in Austria. Furthermore, it lays out regulatory goals, including the protection of democracy and access to information, constitutional and human rights, and the increase of citizen awareness. In addition, the plan proposes measures to achieve these goals, namely the establishment of a focus group, enhanced coordination at the regulatory level, a cooperation framework between different stakeholders from the government, business, media and research, awareness campaigns regarding content trustability for online users and the general population, as well as active participation towards the goals set of the European Action Plan for Democracy.
