Roskomnadzor announces measures against Google for non-compliance with Russian law

On 7 April 2022, the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media of Russia, Roskomnadzor, announced that is implementing sanctions on Google due to the company’s refusal to comply with previous orders. The measures include informing users of Russian law violations, a ban on advertising distribution and Google’s information resources as an object of advertising. The Rosmomnadzor stated that Google’s video hosting platform YouTube spread misinformation regarding the Russian special operations in Ukraine and failed to remove more than 12’000 materials classified as false and illegal. Furthermore, Roskmnaddazor claimed that since April 2020 it has identified 60 instances of discrimination by YouTube against the Russian government and media. The implemented sanctions will remain in force until Google complies with Roskomnadzor orders.
