Roskomnadzor partially restricts access to Facebook due to censorship allegations

On 25 February 2022, the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) announced that it is imposing interim measures on Facebook and partially restricting access by slowing down the network’s traffic. The measures follow the decision of the Prosecutor General's Office and Foreign Ministry to recognize Facebook in violation of Federal Law No. 272-FZ, which prohibits platforms from limiting users' right to free information access on foreign Internet platforms. On 24 February 2022, Roskomnadzor sent a letter to Meta Platforms demanding it to restore access to Russian media publications on Facebook. However, Meta decided not to comply with Roskomnadzor’s requirements and stated that it blocked the access due to Russian media’s violation of community rules.
