Investigation into unclear pricing in travel industry announced

On 20 January 2022, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has announced an investigation into the travel industry and specifically tour operators for allegedly offering unclear pricing on travel and accommodation websites. The ACM noted that prices displayed on websites must include all additional costs, such as cleaning and service fees, upfront. Rather than simply paying the advertised price, customers are currently paying a lot more due to these hidden additional costs. The ACM made it clear that these rules must be complied with otherwise it will use its power to impose sanctions for failure to comply with regulations. Tour operators are however welcome to contact the ACM to receive feedback on the presentation of their prices.
