Adoption of Shanghai Guidelines for Application of Algorithms to Online Marketing

On 12 November 2021, the Shanghai Municipal Administration for Market Regulation has published the Shanghai Guidelines for Application of Algorithms to Online Marketing, containing information on prohibited and encouraged uses of algorithms in online marketing. For example, algorithms should not be used for unfair pricing, unequal treatment of customers, or to abuse market dominance. The guidelines encourage the use of algorithms to protect rights and interests of disadvantaged groups as well as the transparency of algorithms.
